How do you know if you, or someone you know, has a hearing problem?

Approximately 36 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That’s 17 percent of the U.S. population, making it the third most common public health issue in the country after heart disease and arthritis. If you suspect someone you know has hearing loss, you can perform a simple screening. Cover your mouth, and in a normal conversational voice ask the person the following questions:

1 . Do you, or someone you know, think you have a hearing loss?
Oftentimes, the person with the hearing loss is the last to know, but their significant others are well aware of their hearing loss.

2.  Do you have difficulty hearing in background noise?
Difficulty hearing in background noise is an early indicator of hearing loss that may be associated with “Hidden Hearing Loss”.

3.  Do you experience bothersome buzzing, ringing, or pulsing?
The primary cause of tinnitus is hearing loss. People often notice tinnitus before their hearing loss.

A response of “What?” “Huh?” or anything other than “No” warrants a Diagnostic Hearing Test.  Schedule an appointment at St. Elizabeth’s Hearing Aid Center by calling  617-779-6460 or e-mail SEMHearingAidCenter@Steward.org.
