Our experienced therapists, specialists and certified rehabilitation registered nurses, bilingual in English and Spanish, are committed to quality care and provide patients with at least three hours of individualized therapy every day. Your physician can also check on you at any time and collaborate with our team on an individualized plan for more effective outcomes. At the Acute Rehabilitation Hospital at St. Luke’s Medical Center, we offer the following specialized services:

Aquatic Therapy

The Acute Rehabilitation Hospital offers a unique aquatic therapy program to help you control body movements in ways not possible on land. Experienced therapists take a hands-on approach by joining you in our 18 ft. x 24 ft. pool — which accommodates various heights and abilities — for more effective, more accurate rehabilitation and training. The 92-96 degree water’s buoyancy reduces the stress on joints and eases discomfort during exercise to help you realize improved physical function, muscle tone, balance and cardiovascular performance.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps people learn or regain both physical and cognitive abilities to carry out the activities of daily living. These services can be especially valuable to persons recovering from a stroke or brain injury as well as those suffering from disorders like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. Following a thorough evaluation, our therapists work one-on-one with each patient to help maximize skills and abilities. Often, these services make the difference that enables patients to live independently at home.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists can work with you to relieve pain, improve mobility, restore impaired functions and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities. Upon referral from your doctor, our experienced therapists will develop an individualized program of care tailored to your needs and abilities.

Speech & Language Therapy

Speech therapy can be especially helpful for patients whose abilities are impaired because of a stroke or head injury, those who suffer from speech impediments such as stuttering, patients who have suffered a hearing loss and those with a mental disability or a condition such as cerebral palsy. For patients who have swallowing problems, we can perform a barium swallow study to diagnose the cause of the problem and provide treatment. Our therapists are trained in providing VitalStim®, — the only therapy of its kind certified by the Food & Drug Administration for the treatment of swallowing disorders. By using electrical stimulation to increase strength and coordination of the swallowing muscles, our speech pathologists may help patients improve their quality of life and regain the ability to enjoy normal eating and drinking.

Neurological Rehabilitation

The Acute Rehabilitation Hospital provides the earliest possible start to rehabilitation for patients with compromised or lost functions due to neurological disorders. Following a thorough evaluation, our therapists work with you on a comprehensive treatment plan that may include a variety of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, VitalStim® dysphagia program, neuropsychology services and other therapy services. You’ll receive the utmost respect and care on your journey to regaining as much language, memory, problem-solving, cognitive functions and physical mobility as possible.

Multi-trauma Rehabilitation

Starting with a collaborative rehabilitation plan in the critical period following medical stability, we work closely with you to treat every affected system in a manner that promotes optimal outcomes. When your treatment is completed, we also offer planning, education, outpatient therapy and other resources to ease the transition for you and your family to daily activities at home and in the community.
