Hospital(s)

Cancer care sometimes includes radiation therapy. Depending on the type of cancer to be treated, radiation therapy may be administered externally, or internally using special radioactive techniques.

Saint Anne's Hospital Regional Cancer Center provides a variety of advanced radiation therapy technologies, including:

  • 4-D CT simulation technology for advanced radiation therapy planning
  • Four linear accelerators that provide state-of-the-art external beam radiation therapy
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) that adjusts for movement, such as with normal breathing
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy for gynecologic, skin, and other cancers
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery for brain and neurological cancers
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (also known as Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiation Therapy) for the treatment of lung and other cancers

Our team also includes health professionals specially trained in cancer care. They include:

  • Medical physicists ensure optimal safety and effectiveness of a patient's radiation treatment plan
  • Medical dosimetrists help to calculate the precise dosage of a treatment plan
  • Radiation therapists deliver the treatment plan.
  • Specially trained nurses care for patients' physical and other needs during treatment
  • Support staff, including social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and registered dietitians, whose focus is on caring for patients' emotional, physical,  and nutritional needs with a cancer diagnosis

As a multidisciplinary team, oncology specialists work together to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient. We ensure that referring physicians and other cancer care specialists involved in the patient’s care are kept informed of those plans and the patient’s progress during and after radiation therapy.
