Satellite ED to be located at Quincy Medical Center

Steward Health Care System LLC (Steward) announced today that it filed a letter of intent to the Massachusetts Department of Public Heath (DPH) to operate a new Satellite Emergency Facility in Quincy. The proposed Steward Satellite Emergency Facility – Quincy would be initially located at 114 Whitwell Street in Quincy (the site of the closing Quincy Medical Center and within its current emergency department space) and be open to patients 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Steward submitted its letter of intent to DPH last week and will provide a formal application in the next few days.

“From the beginning, Steward has always been committed to maintaining 24/7 access to emergency room services in Quincy,” said Mark Girard, MD, president of Steward Hospitals. “We are working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and local officials to determine the best way to meet the needs of the Quincy community.”

The proposed Steward Satellite Emergency Facility – Quincy will be staffed at all times with Emergency Room physicians and nurses. It would operate under the Carney Hospital license and offer patients emergency care 24 hours per day at the satellite location in Quincy. On-site diagnostic radiology (including CT scans and ultrasound) and laboratory services would also be available. If necessary, patients will be transferred to other acute care hospitals for inpatient services or serious emergencies.

“As we wind down operations of the full Quincy Medical Center at the end of this month, we hope to maintain uninterrupted access to emergency services,” explained Girard.

Steward’s plans are subject to DPH review and approval. The process is underway and more details will be released when they are finalized.
