Earn a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science

Enter the Medical Laboratory Science program at Holy Family Hospital:

Learn to perform highly specialized tests to diagnose and/or aid in the treatment of disease, examine blood or body fluid specimens under the microscope for bacteria, parasites, etc. that might indicate cancer or other diseases, evaluate new instruments, implement new test procedures, assume managerial roles and more.

 

What is the Medical Laboratory Science Certificate Program?

The mission of the Medial Laboratory Science (MLS) Program is to educate and graduate competent, ethical, entry-level medical laboratory scientists with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform routine clinical laboratory testing in all major areas of the laboratory. Upon completion of the MLS program, students will be able to:

  • Be eligible to take American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification exam or American Medical Technologist (AMT) certification exam.
  • Enter the clinical laboratory, with the technical, behavioral, ethical, and professional skills necessary to begin a career in laboratory science as an entry level medical laboratory scientist.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, peers and other members of the health care team.

 

What are the Prerequisites for the MLS Program?

Prospective MLS students must successfully complete specific criteria to be accepted into the MLS program. Students must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in biology or chemistry with the following course requirements:

  • 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in biological sciences
  • 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in chemistry.
     
  • Required Prerequisite Courses: (1 semester each)
    • Organic or Biochemistry
    • College level math, algebra or above
       
  • Highly Recommended courses:
    • Immunology
    • Microbiology
    • Genetics
    • Physics
    • Statistics
    • Molecular biology
    • Anatomy and Physiology
       
  • An Immunology course and a general Microbiology review using the CDC Microbiology Series, will be provided as part of the curriculum should a student not have taken immunology or a microbiology course before entering the program. Taking an immunology course, microbiology course or CDC microbiology series will be recommended to be taken before the program.

 

What is the Curriculum?

The MLS Certification Program will take 12 to 16 months to complete.

What Is the Enrollment Cost?
