The Cardiac Arrhythmia Center at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center provides the latest diagnostic assessment and treatments for patients with arrhythmias.
Every person’s heartbeat is regulated by electrical impulses. The speed with which these impulses fire increase or decrease based on factors like activity level or stress. Cardiac arrhythmias occur when electrical signals don’t properly coordinate or follow the proper pathways in the heart, resulting in rapid or irregular heartbeats, which often feel like fluttering or a racing heartbeat.
Meet Dr. Wylie
Arrhythmias are a common problem in both young and old patients and can cause a variety of symptoms. The most common arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation – a common cause of stroke – that can cause symptoms of palpitations, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath. Some arrhythmias are harmless, but others may be highly symptomatic or even life threatening.
Electrophysiology doctors perform electrophysiology studies, or EP studies, on a patient’s heart to diagnose fast or irregular heartbeats, determine the underlying cause and determine a reliable treatment to stabilize the heart’s electrical signals. They often perform catheter ablation procedures to eliminate electrical impulse pathways that are causing arrhythmias.
As part of St. Elizabeth’s integrated cardiac program, electrophysiology (EP) physicians work closely with heart failure and stroke experts, along with cardiothoracic surgeons, to provide the best treatment, care, and outcomes
